Morning: A Historic Stroll Through the Old Town

To get to Graz from Slovenia is far from complicated as there are good Flixbus and train options from both Ljubljana and Maribor. But keep in mind that the centre of Graz is quite far from the main train station and the Flixbus station especially, so we recommend taking a taxi or the public transport to the main part of the city.

1. Altstadt (Old Town)

We recommend starting the city exploration by visiting the Old Town first. This enchanting part of the city, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, marks a labyrinth of cobblestone streets, mediaeval buildings, and picturesque squares which offer a perfect scenery for taking aesthetic Instagram photos.

2. Hauptplatz (Main Square)

Do not forget to stop at the Hauptplatz, the main square of Graz. It’s dominated by the iconic Rathaus (City Hall) and surrounded by elegant Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Spend some time admiring the grandeur of the Rathaus and the beautiful fountain in the centre of the square.

3. Uhrturm (Clock Tower)

Afterwards, make your way to one of the most popular attractions, the Graz Clock Tower. Go up to the Schlossberg, a historic hill that offers panoramic views of Graz. Next, climb the clock tower, which is an emblem of the city, and marvel at the stunning vistas of Graz and the surrounding hills.

4. Schlossberg Rutsche (Schlossberg Slide)

Don’t forget to try sliding down the Schlossberg Rutsche, the tallest underground slide in the world. In just 40 seconds it will give everyone a rush of adrenaline, perfect for adventure seekers.

Lunch: Savoring Styrian Cuisine

After the morning stroll one can definitely build some appetite. If you not only like to explore the history but also the local cuisine, we definitely advise you to try some hearty Styrian delicacies.

A place we recommend is Der Steirer Graz. Indulge in a delicious plate of pumpkin seed oil-dressed salad, followed by a hearty serving of Styrian fried chicken, a local specialty. To accompany the meal, try a glass of refreshing Styrian wine.

Afternoon: Cultural Delights and Hidden Gems

With a satisfied stomach, continue your journey through Graz and uncover some cultural delights and hidden gems.

1. Universität Graz (University of Graz)

Strolling through the courtyards of the University of Graz is like stepping into a historical novel. The university, founded in 1585, boasts impressive architecture and beautifully landscaped gardens.

2. Oper Graz (Graz Opera House)

If time allows, catch a performance at the Graz Opera House. It’s an exquisite venue for opera, ballet, and classical music. Even if you don’t have a ticket, the building’s exterior is a sight to behold.

3. Murinsel (The Mur Island)

A unique architectural gem awaits you in the middle of the River Mur – the Murinsel, a floating artificial island designed by the renowned architect Vito Acconci. It serves as an event venue and a peaceful spot to relax by the water.

4. Schloss Eggenberg (Eggenberg Castle)

As the day is beginning to wind down, end your day with a visit to the stunning Schloss Eggenberg, a palace and park complex on the outskirts of Graz. The palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a prime example of Baroque architecture. Explore the opulent rooms and take a leisurely walk through the manicured gardens. The highlight is the Planetary Room, which features breathtaking frescoes depicting the cosmos.
