10 things to do in Ljubljana

Ljubljana was ranked 5th by Forbes at the top of European cities where life is idyllic. The city also received the green city award in 2016. For sure the Slovenian capital guarantees you some magical moments during your stay!

1. Stroll along the banks of the Ljubljanica

The Slovenian capital is crossed by a beautiful river: Ljubljanica. Its banks are pedestrian and walking around is very pleasant. As soon as the sun comes up, join the Grudnovo nabrežje banks, they are in full sun throughout the day 🌞. You can do tours on the Ljubljanica by boat 🛥️ (9 € for 40 min) but doing this same walk on foot following the banks is just as pleasant.

2. Go to the Central market

The Ljubljana market takes place every morning, from Monday to Saturday. There are many local producers, fresh food products but also others typical Slovenian products like honey, tapes lace or wooden wares. Go there preferably on Saturday morning and have breakfast in the bars around the market.

3. Have a drink at the Neboticnik skyscraper

Neboticnik was the first skyscraper of Ljubljana and is now a not-be-missed monument of the Slovenian capital. Designed in the 20’s, the construction of the building began in 1930. Three years after, it was the highest skyscraper of Yugoslavia and one of the highest buildings in Europe with a height of 70 meters! 😮

Now this skyscraper is a residential and office building, but at the top you can find one of the best bar of Ljubljana: lounge music 🎵, cocktails 🍹 and big sofas, but especially a 360° view of the Slovenian capital, the Julian Alps, Tivoli Park, Golovec Forest, Krim Mountain… The view is just amazing! 🤩

4. Reading a book in an open-air library

Every summer, the city install open-air libraries 📚 where you can find lounge chairs, books and magazines in Slovenian and in English. The nicest library is in the botanical garden of Ljubljana. 🌳🌼

5. Visit the huge Union Brewery

150 years ago, when the founders of Union looked for a place to build their brewery, the presence of a source and a railroad, made them decide for the center of Ljubljana.

Today you can visit this brasserie and you can eat hearty traditional dishes and of course, taste one of the best Slovenian beer! 🍺

6. Go up to Ljubljana Castle

🏰 Ljubljana Castle is on a hill which overlooks the town. To climb to the castle of Ljubljana, you can take the funicular or the small tourist train but I recommend you to go on foot by the pretty Reber lane or by Ulica na grad. Go there in the afternoon, once you get to the top you could watch a sunset over the capital… 🌆

7. Hang a love padlock

The Mesarski Most was designed so that people could hang love padlocks. If you are visiting Ljubljana as lovers or if you fall in love in Slovenia… you can leave a trace of your visit there. 🔒💕

8. Drink a mulled wine at the Christmas market

Every year the Christmas market of Ljubljana is a big success with thousands people everyday. If there is a place to be at Christmas time it’s Ljubljana, with the huge Christmas tree 🎄 at the Prešeren Place and the beautiful Christmas market that goes on all the Ljubljanica banks and on the market place. For sure you will enjoy an evening in the illuminated streets of the city center by eating hot chestnuts and drinking mulled wine! 🌰🍷

9. Go to the Tivoli park

🏞 Everyday, hundreds of Slovenians jog at Tivoli Park. 🏃‍

If you want, you can go around the zoo or opt for a more difficult by climbing the hills of the forest of Tivoli Park. Here you will find a pretty church ⛪ and right next to it, a gostilna (traditional restaurant), where you can admire the view of southern Slovenia from the terrace while drinking a good fruit juice. 🥤

10. Party in Metelkova

Metelkova is the most amazing and interesting place that Ljubljana can offer to those who want to party. A large and lively squat where something almost always happens at the weekend. A must visit in the evening if you want to party in Ljubljana. 🎉

This squat is a former military barracks of the Yugoslav army whose buildings are decorated by Ljubljana artists. Festive evenings are organized every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If it is not too cold, you can come there at 9:30 p.m. to drink a pint for 2€! This is where you will meet Slovenians most easily before listening to a concert or dancing until the end of the night to underground sounds. 🎵
